Los Angeles, Calif. - After taking the first two games of the series yesterday, the Bulldogs fell in the finale on Sunday 12-2. Fresno State fell behind early after two UCLA home runs, and despite getting offensive production from leadoff hitter Steve Susdorf were unable to close the gap. Susdorf was 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the Fresno State offense. The Bulldogs return to Fresno for their home opener next weekend against No. 11 Pepperdine.
Fresno State got on the board first with a quick start in the first inning, as Steve Susdorf started the day with a single, and Loren Storey also singled, moving Susdorf to third but getting caught between bases for the first out. Susdorf scored on an RBI single by Kent Sakamoto, giving the Bulldogs three straight singles to start the game. UCLA got out of the inning with a double play though, and answered back with three runs of their own after Tim Stewart hit a three-run home run off of starter Brandon Burke.
UCLA continued to add runs in the early-going, adding two in the second with a solo home run from Ryan Babineau, and Stewart again contributed to a rally with an RBI single to spot the Bruins a 5-1 lead. Susdorf hit a solo home run for the `Dogs in the third, but the Bruins added two more to take a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning.
Tyson Brummet picked up the win for the Bruins, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, and struck out eight, holding on as the Bruins continued to add runs, putting together five more runs through the remainder on the way to the win. Burke took the loss for the Bulldogs, his second of the year.
Fresno State returns to action next Friday as the Bulldogs host Pepperdine in their home opener February 10. The Waves opened their season this past weekend, taking two games from UNLV in Malibu. The two teams will begin play Friday night at 6:35 p.m., before playing two afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday, both beginning at 1:05 p.m.
