FRESNO, Calif. - Beginning Friday, the Fresno State women's tennis team plays eight matches in 16 days as it comes down the home stretch of the 2006 dual match season. On Friday the Bulldogs host 20th-ranked Long Beach State at noon in another highly anticipated showdown at the Wathen Tennis Center. The match was originally scheduled at 1:30 p.m., but was moved up to noon to avoid possible poor weather conditions. Fresno State, currently ranked 29th, defeated then-No. 20 William and Mary earlier this month in an exciting 4-3 victory. The Bulldog are 8-6, while Long Beach State will come to Fresno having won 14 straight with an overall dual match record of 14-2.
The Bulldogs are coming off a tough loss to No. 19 Harvard in Los Angeles on March 27. The Crimson defeated Fresno State 4-3. However, seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter have both won three consecutive matches in singles dating back to the match against William and Mary.
Freshman Melanie Gloria is 10-3 overall playing in the No. 1 spot in singles. In doubles, Sainz and Winterhalter are 10-4 in dual matches and 26-7 overall. The Bulldogs have reached as high as No. 27 in the rankings and could vault higher with a win against Long Beach State.
The Bulldogs continue their home stand when they host San Diego on Sunday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. A reminder to all, the match against San Diego was scheduled for 11 a.m. but has been moved up to 10:30 a.m.
