What's Coming Up
The Fresno State women's tennis team begins a five-match home stand beginning this Wednesday, Mar. 8, when it hosts William & Mary at 1:30 p.m. in the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs are 1-2 all-time versus William & Mary, which is currently ranked 18th. It will be the first time this year that a top-20 team comes to the Wathen Tennis Center. On Saturday, Mar. 11, Pennsylvania comes to town for a 11 a.m. match. Penn is ranked 58th, and the Bulldogs hold a 3-0 all-time advantage over the Quakers. Then on Sunday, Mar. 12, the Bulldogs host 37h-ranked New Mexico at Noon. Fresno State is currently 6-5 in dual match play and 2-4 against top-45 competition.
What Just Happened
The Bulldogs went 1-2 over the weekend during a three-match road trip in Texas. The Bulldogs first made a stop in Waco, Texas, losing to No. 16 Baylor, 7-0. The Bulldogs bounced back though, taking a 4-3 victory from No. 31 Texas A&M. Then on Sunday, Fresno State lost to No. 13 TC, 5-2. The Bulldogs had one the doubles point, but won only one of the six singles matches. Freshman Melanie Gloria defeated Nicole Leimbach, ranked fourth in the NCAA, at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (8), (10-6). It is the second time that Gloria has beaten the No. 4 player in the country. She last beat Alice Barnes of Stanford when Barnes was ranked fourth in late January.
Gloria Winning Big
Gloria, a freshman from Montreal, has made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs and left quite an impression on opponents this season. Gloria is currently 8-2 overall, and 8-1 playing at No. 1 singles. She has beaten three players in the top-20: Alice Barnes of Stanford, Elena Gantcheva of UNLV, and Texas Christian's Nicole Leimbach. This week, Gloria is likely to face Megan Moulton-Levy (29th) of William & Mary and Maja Kovacek (24th) of New Mexico at No. 1 singles. Most recently, Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett have been playing together in doubles, going 5-1 at the No. 3 spot.
