San Jose, Calif. - Junior pitcher Andy Underwood led the way with an effective and efficient start, throwing just 95 pitches on the way to a complete game shutout over San Jose State on Sunday. Underwood struck out seven batters in his nine innings, scattering four hits and walking one Spartan as he picked up his seventh win of the season.
Both starting pitchers were in command early, as San Jose State's Josh Amberson matched up on the mound with Underwood, and the teams stayed scoreless through much of the early going. Underwood needed only six pitches to get through the first inning, and Amberson struck out two batters in each of his five innings of work as the teams worked quickly through three innings.
The top of the fourth started out with a bang, as Beau Mills led off the inning with a towering home run to right field that exited the stadium to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. After striking out Sakamoto, Amberson gave up a single to Steve Susdorf, one of three hits on the day for the sophomore, and Brian Lapin brought him home with an RBI triple that made its way over the head of Sam Hall in center field.
The Bulldogs brought home two more runs in the fifth inning. Nick Moresi started the rally with a one out single to left field, and after getting a second out via a strikeout, the Spartans wanted no part of Mills, intentionally walking the Bulldog third baseman to get to Kent Sakamoto. Sakamoto came through with the clutch hit, though, singling to left to bring home Moresi, and Susdorf followed that hit with his third consecutive hit, putting the Bulldogs ahead 4-0.
That was more than enough for Underwood, who only saw four Spartan baserunners for the remainder of the game, finishing with under 100 pitches to get the first complete game shutout for a Bulldog pitcher since Matt Garza accomplished the feat last season against Hawai'i.
Courtesy of the new-look WAC, Fresno State has a scheduled break in conference play as the odd-team out in the seven team league. With that break, the Bulldogs will welcome a familiar opponent to Beiden Field, as the team hosts the Dallas Baptist Patriots for four games starting next Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
