Sacramento, Calif. - The Fresno State bats were hot early, and the Bulldogs cruised to their 10th straight win Saturday with a 14-3 victory over Sacramento State. Nick Moresi was 3-for-6 with a double and a home run, and three other Bulldogs had three hits on the day. Hawai'i won their game to stay within reach of the title as both teams have one game remaining.
Sacramento State got on the board first in the second game of the series. Both teams moved through the first inning with no runs scored, but in the second, a two-out walk to Brian Conradi ended up hurting the Bulldogs as Jim Strombach doubled to give the Hornets two runners in scoring position. Eddie Romero looked to get out of the inning with a pop-up to second base, but Erik Wetzel lost track of the ball and both runs came around to score on the error.
That was the last time the game was close, as the Bulldogs responded with a huge inning in the third. Wetzel, coming up to bat first, started the inning with a single, and Steve Susdorf was hit for the first of two times to put two runners on. A single from Loren Storey brought home one run, and a two-run double by Christian Vitters put Fresno State in the lead 3-2. Three more hits brought home two more runs, including a double by Frank LoNigro, and a sacrifice bunt by Erik Wetzel scored the final run of the inning as the `Dogs moved ahead 7-2.
More offense was to follow in the fourth inning. Loren Storey led off the inning with his third single, part of a 3-for-3 day at the plate, and two more singles by Kent Sakamoto and Vitters brought home another run. Nick Moresi followed that up with an RBI double, and Brian Lapin put the game out of reach with a three-run shot to left to put the Bulldogs up 12-2.
Eddie Romero cruised the rest of the way to get his 12th win of the season, keeping him on pace with the nation's leaders. Nick Moresi hit a solo shot in the sixth, and Ozzie Lewis scored an unearned run in the seventh to account for the rest of the Bulldogs runs.
Fresno State concludes the regular season tomorrow at Sacramento State with a 12 p.m. start on Sunday. That is a change from the originally scheduled time, having been moved to try and beat incoming rains in the Sacramento area.
