FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State freshman Melanie Gloria was defeated in the first round of the NCAA singles tournament by Klara Jagasova of Texas-Arlington, Wednesday evening in Palo Alto, Calif. Gloria's outstanding freshman season came to a close after suffering a straight set loss, 6-4, 7-6 (9).

Gloria ends the season with an overall record of 20-6. She was outstanding throughout the entire season. Her first match as a Bulldog featured a victory over then-No. 4 Alice Barnes. Her most recent upset came against Cal's Zsuzsanna Fodor in the second round of the NCAA team tournament.

Gloria was the WAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. She was named to the conference's first-team in both singles and doubles.

Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter will take on Kristen James and Lori Stern of Virginia in the first round of the NCAA doubles tournament on Thursday, May 25.
