Sainz And Winterhalter Advance, Cech Falls At NCAA Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's tennis seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter opened the NCAA doubles tournament with a convincing win, Thursday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University. The Bulldogs' duo defeated Kristen James and Lori Stern of Virginia in straight sets, advancing to Friday's round of 16.
Fresno State men's tennis junior Jakub Cech was defeated by seventh-seeded Arnau Brugues of Tulsa 6-3, 6-4 in the NCAA singles second round.
Sainz and Winterhalter improved to 36-11 overall with their 6-0, 6-2 win over Virginia's tandem. The two women were excellent during the fall season in which they compiled a 16-3 record including an ITA Northwest Regional championship and an appearance in the ITA All-American final.
In the dual match season, Sainz and Winterhalter were 19-8 and led the Bulldogs to their fifth consecutive WAC championship. Both were first-team All-WAC in singles and doubles.
Sainz and Winterhalter will play the winner of USC's Matias/Vermeulen and Clemson's Salge/Van Adrichem on Friday at a time yet to be determined.
