FRESNO, Calif.- Junior guard Chantella Perera has secured a roster spot on Australia's U-22 Junior National team that will compete at the FIBA Oceania U-22 Women's Championship August 10-13 in New Zealand.
Perera, who was invited to a four-day tryout camp last weekend in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, is one of 12 players that will represent Australia's U-22 squad in international competition. That same team will attempt to qualify for the FIBA U-22 World Championships For Women, scheduled for August 2007 in Guatemala.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to represent my country," said Perera. "It has always been my dream to play for Australia, so competing as a member of the junior national team in New Zealand will be an amazing experience for me and I'm sure it will help me a lot in the progression of my basketball career."
In 2005-06, Perera ranked third on the team in scoring (11.8 ppg) while also finishing second in assists (98) as Fresno State recorded its best season in school history at 24-8. She led the Bulldogs in three-pointers (48), was ranked among the national leaders in free throw shooting for much of the year and scored in double-figures 19 times.
Perera, a two-time Academic All-WAC selection, will be one of six seniors on the Bulldog roster when the 2006-07 campaign begins in November.
