FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's basketball head coach Adrian Wiggins has announced the addition of two newcomers to next year's squad, as LaShaunte Stephens (San Francisco) and Rachel Majewski (New Mexico) will join the Bulldogs as transfers.
Due to NCAAA transfer rules, Stephens and Majewski must sit out this season and are eligible play in 2007-08. However, both are cleared to participate in all team practices and functions for the upcoming campaign.
"I'm looking forward to both student-athletes joining our program," said Wiggins. "Both players are coachable, work extremely hard and have an opportunity to contribute immediately."
Stephens joins the `Dogs in her junior season while Majewski comes in as a sophomore.
Stephens, a Fresno native and 2004 Sunnyside High School graduate, played in 25 games while making 14 starts for San Francisco last year. The 5-10 guard ranked third on the squad in both scoring (8.2 ppg) and rebounding (4.8 rpg), scoring in double-figures seven times while notching two double-doubles. In 2004-05, Stephens averaged 6.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Dons as a freshman.
Stephens was a three-sport standout at Sunnyside High School, also competing in volleyball and track and field. A two-time Gatorade High School Player of the Year, she earned North Yosemite League MVP honors and Fresno Bee All-Start First Team honors as a senior. Stephens was a three-time North Yosemite All-League selection and was named the Junior League of Fresno Female Athlete of the Year in 2004.
Majewski, a native of Glendale, Ariz., arrives at Fresno State after completing her freshman year at New Mexico. In 2005-06, the 6-1 guard averaged 3.7 minutes and 1.4 points per game in 16 contests off the bench for the Lobos, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
A 2005 graduate of Ironwood High School, Majewski was a three-year letterwinner despite missing her senior season due to injury. As a prepster, Majewski was an all-state selection as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore. In addition to being named first-team all-region all three years, she was the Desert Region MVP as a junior. Majewski was also a two-time Adidas top-10 All-American during the summer of 2003 and 2004.
Stephens and Majewski join a recruiting class for 2006-07 that also includes: 5-6 guard Brittany Allen (Auburn, Calif.), 5-6 guard Brittny Jones (Austell, Ga.) and 6-1 forward Stephanie Madden (Bakersfield, Calif.).
