Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State jumped out to a quick lead after a home run from Ozzie Lewis in the first inning, but Cal State Fullerton's starter Wes Roemer and Blake Davis undid the `Dogs as the Titans went on to a 9-2 win. Roemer struck out 12 batters and Davis hit two home runs as the Bulldogs fell to 1-1 in postseason play.
Bulldog fans were able to cheer early as the Bulldogs started the game with hot bats. Ozzie Lewis kicked off the action with a solo home run, his sixth of the year as the Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead. The rally continued, as Steve Susdorf walked and Kent Sakamoto followed with a single up the middle. A second run then came across as Nick Moresi hit a bloop single into right, allowing Susdorf to move from third and put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.
Fullerton answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Justin Turner opened the Titans' half of the inning with a walk, and after a long fly from Blake Davis, Brett Pill singled and Danny Dorn followed with an RBI single to get Fullerton on the board. Another walk loaded the bases, but Doug Fister responded, striking out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
From that point, both Fister and Cal State Fullerton starter Roemer settled in, as Fister moved through two uneventful innings except for a solo home run by Blake Davis and Roemer went through three perfect innings, striking out six.
More trouble for the `Dogs started in the fourth, as Brandon Tripp led off the inning with a single, and John Curtis was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. The Bulldogs got a second out with a fly out from Shane Turner. However, the next batter put the game out of reach as Blake Davis hit his second home run of the game, putting the Titans ahead 5-2. Fullerton then added two more runs when Brett Pill singled and Danny Dorn added another home run in the inning to make the score 7-2.
Right fielder Brandon Tripp added a fourth home run in the fifth inning as Cal State Fullerton moved ahead 8-2, and added another run in the sixth to lead to the final tally.
Collegiate Baseball's Co-Player of the Year Wes Roemer went eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits and matching a career-high 12 strikeouts. Adam Jorgenson finished out the ninth for Cal State Fullerton, while Justin Wilson finished the game in relief for Fresno State.
The Bulldogs will have one more shot to advance to the super-regionals starting tomorrow. Fresno State starts the day with a 5 p.m. game against San Diego, and if the team wins that ballgame, the `Dogs will get a rematch with the Titans at 9 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPNU.
