FRESNO, Calif. - In just its second year of existence, the Fresno State women's golf program has produced its first national award winners.
Senior Meggie Fagundes and freshman Jennifer Shipley were named to the 2005-06 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar team. The award honors those players who have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade point average and been a significant contributor on the team.
Fagundes and Shipley are the first Bulldog players to receive this honor. The Fresno State program began play in the fall of 2004.
"I'm very proud of Meggie and Jennifer for making such an elite team," said head coach Angie Cates. "They have both been outstanding performers on the course and in the classroom. I know Meggie will be an excellent leader in her chosen field and we are excited to have Jennifer back for the next three years. We are pleased to have such outstanding student-athletes in our program and representing Fresno State on a national level."
Fagundes, a native of Atwater, Calif., has been an outstanding student-athlete and campus leader for the last two years. In addition to accomplishments on the golf squad, she has been an active member of Fresno State's Student-Athlete Advistory Council (SAAC). She majored in Agricultural Business.
Shipley, from Clovis, Calif., had an outstanding freshman season in which she earned second-team All-WAC honors and placed seventh at the 2006 WAC Championship tournament.
