Fresno, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, the Bulldogs scored a quick goal and moved on to the win. Following the early goal, the Yokosuka Seagulls scored twice to take the lead, but sophomore Rose Vandenberg scored two goals to put the Bulldogs back on top for the win.
Finishing up the team's exhibition slate against the Japanese traveling squad the Yokosuka Seagulls, WAC preseason Player of the Year scored the first goal of the game, putting a shot just past the reach of goalkeeper Reiko Yoshida at 4:38 to move Fresno State ahead 1-0.
Yokosuka quickly battled back in the first half. The Seagulls tied the game at 15:01 after forward Ami Otaki drove home a penalty kick following a foul in the box by Fresno State. Continuing to pressure the Bulldogs, the Seagulls took the lead eight minutes later as Kaoruko Suzuki headed in a free kick by Otaki.
The teams would continue to stay balanced at that mark for the next ten minutes until the Fresno State substitutions answered back. Sophomore Rose Vandenberg entered the game at 27:20, and eight minutes later evened the score, bending a penalty kick around Yoshida to tie the game at 2.
The second half was more of the same, as a cross from Rose Vandenberg entered the net on a misplay by Yoshida, and the Bulldogs held on for the remainder of the game to get the win. Senior Angie Larsen held the Seagulls scoreless in the second half with one save, and goaltender Jeannette Paine took care of the back line duties in the first half, also making one save.
Fresno State begins the regular season next Friday, when the Bulldogs host San Francisco at Bulldog Stadium. That is the season opener for both teams, and will begin at 7 p.m.
