Provo, Utah - Fresno State took advantage of a strong early effort, as Cortney Sobrero scored her team-leading third goal of the year and Angie Larsen turned in her fifth shutout as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1-1 on the year. The loss was the first for BYU on the year.
The Cougars outshot Fresno State 11-2 in the first half, but Fresno State was the team that made their shots count, taking an early lead. The Bulldogs moved ahead in the 22nd minute, as BYU goalkeeper moved out early to challenge a run from senior forward Cortney Sobrero, who lifted a shot from 25-five feet over a leaping Woodbury and down into the net as the Bulldogs took the lead.
"Coming off of a somewhat unlucky loss, I though we came out and played extremely well early," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "I thought we had a really good tempo, and we controlled possession of the ball in their end."
As has been the case in 2006, with a lead in the game the Bulldogs moved towards the defensive, leaning on the team's strength and improving to 4-0-0 when scoring first. BYU continued to outshoot Fresno State, but the Bulldogs made more of their shots, putting six of their nine shots on goal as opposed to the Cougars, who only hit Angie Larsen for 10 of their 19 shots.
Larsen continued to play well, recording 10 saves to seal her fifth shutout of the season, and her second against a Top 20 opponent. Overall, the Bulldogs improved to 2-1 against Top 25 competition in their first week among the rankings.
"BYU is a great team with a lot of great players, and they put a lot of pressure on us," said Springthorpe. "The second half was very defensive, on both sides, but we kept the ball out of the net and came out with a win against a team that's going to do very well this year."
Fresno State returns to Bulldog Stadium for an extended homestand, playing four games in eight days starting with Portland State at 7 p.m. on Friday, then playing two more games in five days against Sacramento State and Pacific.
