Bulldogs Fall In Double OT 1-0

Fresno, Calif. - Highlanders forward Heidi Garrett scored the game-winning goal with 9:32 remaining in the second overtime as Fresno State lost in their second overtime contest of the season 1-0. Fresno State held the edge in shots and shots on goal, but the Garrett's twenty-yard shot off of a Fresno State block was the difference.
Both teams moved quickly through a slow first period, as the teams combined for just four shots in the first half. UC Riverside came out quickly and got the first two shots, as Tessa Lennala took the first of her five shots on the evening in the third minute, and a second shot by Riverside's Letty Villalpando went wide after a corner kick by the Highlanders.
The Bulldogs answered in the first half, getting a lift from their bench after Chelsea Davis, Amanda Reyes and Andrea Salvador entered the game. Immediately afterwards, the Bulldogs earned their first corner kick of the game, and got the first close scoring chance, as a Rochelle Jagdeo header went just high of the net on a free kick. The Bulldogs added the only shot on goal in an even half in the last five, minutes, as Chelsea Davis forced a play by UC Riverside's Tawny Poggio to close the half.
Fresno State came out firing in the second half, taking eight shots and getting most of the chances, as UC Riverside only put one shot on goal in the period. The Bulldogs their first shot just two minutes in, as Christina Gilbert sent a shot wide, and the Bulldogs got another shot five minutes later, as a Nicole Gutierrez run ended in a shot moving just to the side of Poggio.
Continuing to pressure on the Highlanders' half of the field, Fresno State got another chance in the 74th minute as a cross from Antonea Lugo moved in front of the goal, finding Amanda Reyes who headed the ball past Poggio but just to the left of the post, keeping the game scoreless.
Two Fresno State corner kicks in the first overtime resulted in one shot for the `Dogs, but the game remained scoreless heading into the second overtime. A midfield turnover got the ball to Garrett who took a shot that was blocked by the Fresno State defense, but came clear to Garrett who put the ball over the top of Larsen for the win.
Fresno State takes to the road to close out their non-conference slate, beginning with a Sept. 24 match with Cal Poly. The Bulldogs return home for their WAC opener, hosting Nevada at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6.
