FRESNO, Calif. - At halftime Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe told this team the outcome of Sunday's WAC contest with Utah State was going to come down to a set piece. The Bulldog coach was right and fortunately for Springthorpe, it was his team that connected on the set piece as Stephanie Yoro drilled home a 30-yard free kick in the 78th minute to lift Fresno State to a 1-0 win on Sunday.

"This is a typical Utah State-Fresno State game," Springthorpe said. "Our games with Utah State are defensive battles with not a whole lot of shots. Games like these are a matter of will."

Two of the last three meetings with the Aggies have ended in 0-0 ties. The win ups Fresno States record to 8-6 and 3-1 in WAC play while Utah State dropped to 6-10 and 2-2 in conference.

Neither team generated many shots as Utah State out shot the Bulldogs 12-11 but only three of USU's 12 shots were on goal.

Sunday's win was the seventh shut out of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Kaity Revel recorded three saves.

In the first half Fresno State attempted eight shots while Utah State had only four. While the Dogs were unable to generate many attempts in the second half, they connected on the one that mattered thanks to Yoro's free kick.

"Yoro takes a lot of free kicks in practice," Springthorpe said. "She is just good at it. She likes to bend the ball and she has a good touch. To her credit she stuck it hard. She played really well today."

Springthorpe also added that he was pleased with the play of his entire team, but especially the defense.

"Our defense was all over the field," Springthorpe said. "We handled the direct balls and limited their shots. It was just a good team effort."
