FRESNO, Calif. - Juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe finished strong at the All-American on Saturday, winning the consolation title with an 8-5 victory over 22nd-ranked Melissa Mang and Tory Zawacki of Duke.
"Melanie and Tinesta got some good ranked wins this week and they finished strong," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "They stepped it up during some tough points and they are really establishing themselves as a good doubles team."
Gloria and Rowe, ranked No. 11 in the country, beat ninth-ranked Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame 9-8 (4) in the consolation semifinal. The Bulldog duo trailed 4-3 in the tiebreaker before rallying off four straight points to clinch the victory.
Despite losing a tough first round match to USC, Gloria and Rowe proved to be one of the top doubles tandems in the country. Along with the two wins today, the Fresno State combo topped sixth-ranked Alex Haney and Melissa Koning of Auburn on Friday.
"I was pleased with our competitiveness this week in doubles," Thibodeau said. "We just need to build on our success and get ready for the regional championships."
Gloria and Rowe, as well as the rest of the Bulldogs, will get an opportunity to showcase at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regionals in a few weeks. Next week, Fresno State heads to Moraga, Calif., for the Saint Mary's Invitational.
