Scouting Saint Mary's
Saint Mary's is 5-5 coming into Wednesday game. After starting the season 5-2 they have dropped three straight games, with the latest being a 66-56 loss on December 9 at Alabama. Four Gaels are scoring in double figures, led by Jontelle Smith's 14.4 points a game. Maija Lahde is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 points and first in rebounding at 6.6 boards a game. As a team Saint Mary's is scoring 71.2 points a sgame and shooting 38 percent from the field.
Bulldogs against Saint Mary's
Saint Mary's leads the overall series with the Bulldogs 5-4. The last time the two teams met was in 2002 when the Bulldogs pulled out a 66-64 victory at home. Fresno State's three other wins came in 1978, 86 and 88.
Scoring Machine
Since the end of last season Tierre Wilson has scored in double figures in 18 straight games. Prior to her career high of 28 points against Long Beach State, Wilson's high point performance during the 18 game stretch was 23 points at Loyola Marymount on December 5, 2007. Including last season, Wilson has led the Bulldogs in scoring in 17 games.
Bulldogs Taking on the State
This year Fresno State plays eight nonconference games against schools from the state of California. The Bulldogs have already played nationally ranked Cal, Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State. Five of Fresno State's next six opponents are against schools from California. Of the six remaining opponents, Saint Mary's (5-5) boasts the best record..
The Final 20
Erica Henry scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds in the second half to spark the Bulldogs to their first win of the season at Long Beach State. Tierre Wilson also scored 20 points and had six rebounds in the final 20 minutes of play while LaToya Brown sank four big free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
Finishing Strong
Friday's win over Long Beach State was the first game this season the Bulldogs have gotten stronger as the game went on as they turned a 31-20 halftime deficit into a 66-55 victory. Fresno State shot 52 percent in the second half and out scored Long Beach State 46-24 in the final period.
