Petukhova Named WAC Player of the Month

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Anastasia Petukhova was named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month on Tuesday. Petukhova was solid during the month of November while competing at the Duals in the Desert tournament in Palm Sprints, Calif. It was the second time this fall that Petukhova has won the award.
Petukhova, a native from Moscow, Russia, performed brilliantly during the Duals in the Desert Classic, Nov. 2-4, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles. Petukhova beat No. 19 Vanja Corovic of Texas in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) and then topped Baylor's Jana Bielikova in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-3). In doubles, Petukhova and teammate Renata Kucerkova beat Baylor's Bielikova and Filipiak before advancing to top Davison and Larsson of Texas, both by the score of 8-4.
Petukhova also won the award for September after winning the Bulldog Classic without dropping a set.
Petukhova concluded the fall season by going 13-2 in singles and 12-4 in doubles. As the No. 47-ranked player in the country, Petukhova won six matches over ranked opponents. Her most impressive victory came when she beat 2006 NCAA Champion and No. 4-ranked Susie Babos of Cal in straight sets during the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
