Fresno, Calif. - The No. 21 ranked Fresno State softball team jumped on the board early against Louisville Friday night and Robin Mackin did the rest of the work as the Bulldogs beat the Cardinals 3-0 in their home opener at Bulldog Diamond.
Mackin pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, while striking out 10 batters and only walking one.
With the win Fresno State improved to 5-2 on the season, while Louisville dropped to 2-5 overall.
Offensively, Haley Perkins set the tone, going 2 for 3 with one run scored. Kristin Sylvester went 1 for 3 with one RBI and one run scored and Michelle Palazuelos went 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Fresno State wasted little time getting on the board. The Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the second inning on a Michelle Palazuelos infield single, scoring Jenna Cervantez.
Cervantez led the inning off with a single, followed by a Lisamarie Coronado single. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, leading to Palazuelos' RBI single.
In the third inning, Fresno State opened up a 3-0 lead with two runs in the frame. Haley Perkins led off the third inning with a double off the right centerfield fence. After Nichole Willis walked, Kristin Sylvester singled home Perkins, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
After Merryann Barr walked, Cervantez hit a ground ball to third base, and Sylvester scored on a wild throw by the Louisville catcher, giving Fresno State a 3-0 lead.
Mackin did the rest of the work on the mound. From one stretch in the fourth inning, Mackin struck out six consecutive Louisville batters, ending in the middle of the sixth inning.
Fresno State returns to action Saturday afternoon when it faces Louisville in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond.
