FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State sophomore Melanie Gloria became the highest tennis player to be ranked in Fresno State history when she reached No. 2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings on Wednesday.
In the previous rankings released in January, Gloria had been at No. 4. Former standout Jelena Pandzic reached No. 3 in September of 2004. Pandzic finished the 2004 dual season ranked No. 6 in the country. In 1999, Fresno State's all-time singles wins leader Dora Djilianova finished the season at No. 5
"Melanie is right there with the best in the country," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "It's not a surprise to see how far she has come. She's been very consistent and she continues to improve."
Gloria vaulted into the top-5 after an outstanding fall season in which she advanced to the final of the ITA All-American. Gloria was also a semifinalist in both the National Indoor Championships and the ITA Northwest Regional. Gloria is 17-4 overall and 3-1 in dual matches this season.
The 18th-ranked Bulldogs are back in action this week in Las Vegas. Fresno State will play three dual matches verses Florida International, UNLV and Long Beach State Feb. 23-25.
