Bulldogs Down Hawkeyes in Slugfest, 13-10

FRESNO, Calif. - On their first Monday night game of the year and in their first meeting in Fresno State history the Bulldogs' baseball team took down the Iowa (3-2) Hawkeyes by a score of 13-10 at Beiden Field.
Right handed pitcher Tanner Scheppers led the Bulldogs on the mound throwing five innings. Holden Sprague relieved Scheppers throwing two innings allowing one hit.
Fresno State started the game with an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs on one hit. The other run scored from third on a wild pitch.
Iowa answered right back in the top of the second inning scoring two runs on a Dusty Napoleon two run home run to left center at 2-2.
Fresno State went on to score five runs in the bottom of the third. One run scored on a double from Steve Susdorf and another on a wild pitch. Three more runs came in when Todd Sandell hit his fourth home run of the year at 7-2.
In the top of the fourth inning Iowa scored three runs on three hits leaving one on base to post a 7-5 deficit. With a pitching change for the Hawkeye's in the bottom of the fourth inning the Bulldogs were able to capitalize with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice, wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Brian Lapin.
Iowa did the same in the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded but scored one run on a fielder's choice and two runs on two singles. Fresno State led Iowa 13-8.
Iowa scored one more run in the top of the eighth and ninth inning for a final 13-10 score.
Erik Wetzel and Steve Susdorf both went 2-for-4 with one double and one single. Fresno State also connected on 11 hits in 31 at bats with seven walks. Jason Breckley earned his fourth save of the year.
Fresno State will play tomorrow in the second and final game of the series against Iowa at 6:05 at Beiden Field.
