Bulldogs Take Home Pepsi-Johnny Quik Title

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (12-15) Bulldogs fell to the Dallas Baptist (12-10) Patriots by a 12-10 score Saturday night in the last game of the annual Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic in front of 1,695 fans at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs took home the PJQ title after a three-way head-to-head tie between Iowa, Dallas Baptist and Fresno State. The `Dogs captured the title in ruling to a tie breaker with least runs allowed. The Bulldogs have now captured the classic two years in a row.
To start the Bulldogs off in the driver's seat Loren Storey hit his third home run of the year and season in the PJQ in the bottom of the first inning at 1-0. Fresno State jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Dan Grub singled left field bringing in Todd Sandell from second base.
Dallas Baptist did not get on the board until the fourth inning when it scored two runs on three hits at two a piece. The Patriots put four more runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Austin Knight singled to left field knocking in JT Bloodworth and Tournament MVP Garrett Baker hit a three run shot to left center at 6-2.
Fresno State answered the call in the gathering four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game up at 6-6 on two hits one coming from Alan Ahmady on a two run homer to right field. Two other runs scored on a ground out and an error.
Starting the inning off for the Patriots in the top of the sixth inning Matt Tucker hit a home run to right center to make the score 7-6. The Bulldogs added their seventh run 7-7 on a ground out from Storey.
In the seventh inning Evan Bigley hit a two run shot to go up by two at 9-7 but Ahmady called the ante and hit a two run home run bringing in All-Tournament offensive player Brian Lapin.
The Patriots took a commanding lead in the eighth inning scoring three runs on two hits and three Bulldog errors. On a hard deficit to comeback Fresno State could only muscle one run on a home run from Steve Susdorf in the bottom of the ninth inning with a final 12-10 score.

Fresno State will play in a three-game series against Louisiana Tech beginning Friday, March 23 at J.C. Love Field at 6:00 p.m. The following two games will be on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
