Softball Faces Pair of Road Doubleheaders

Up Next For the Bulldogs: Fresno State hits the road for a pair of doubleheaders this week at Pacific and at Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs open the week Tuesday, April 3 at Pacific with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. After the Tigers, Fresno State will head north to Moraga to face Saint Mary's on Wednesday, with the first game beginning at 12 p.m. Fresno State enters the week with a 29-12 overall record and has won eight out of its last nine games.
Who's Hot: Fresno State sophomores Haley Perkins and Robin Mackin. Perkins helped lead the Bulldogs to a perfect 3-0 record in WAC play last week. Perkins was unbelievable at the leadoff spot for Fresno State. The sophomore hit .857 in three games, going 6 for 7 with a .909 on base percentage. Perkins scored seven runs, walked twice, was hit by a pitch twice and had a perfect fielding percentage at shortstop. Mackin went 2-0 last week and didn't allow a run in 10 innings pitched. The sophomore gave up five hits in 10 innings, while striking out 14 batters. Opponents hit .147, while she only walked three batters.
On a Roll: The Bulldogs have been on a roll lately, having won eight out of their last nine games. Fresno State is coming off a three-game sweep of Utah State and has won four straight games. The Bulldogs had won four straight games, before losing at Nevada, and bounced back with the same win streak. Overall Fresno State has won 18 out of its last 22 games, with a nine-game winning streak included.
About the Tigers: Pacific comes into Tuesday's doubleheader with a 24-12 overall record, including a 5-0 home mark. The two teams were scheduled to play in late February, but poor weather forced the two games to be pushed back. So far the pitching staff has been led by Chelsea Engle, who is 13-8 overall with a 3.16 earned run average. Jorgensen Alyce is 6-2 with a 3.52 earned run average as the No. 2 pitcher on staff. Offensively, Gina Carbonatto leads the team with a .448 batting average, with 52 hits in 115 at bats. She also has 32 RBI in 36 games and has three home runs, four doubles and four triples. Jennifer Curtier is second on the team with a .377 batting average and Casey Goldsand is batting .361.
About the Gaels: Saint Mary's comes into Wednesday's doubleheader with a 15-18 overall record, including a 10-11 home mark. The Gaels have more wins this season than the past two seasons combined. Molly Bergeson leads the team with a .427 batting average, including 17 runs scored. Sadie Dolcini is second on the team with a .359 batting average and is second on the team with 15 RBI. Megan Galloway leads the team with 16 RBI and four home runs in 33 games. The pitching staff features six pitchers with at least 11 innings logged. Lauren Gardner is 5-2 with a 3.88 earned run average and Megan Galloway is 3-5 with a 2.77 ERA.
Fresno State Receiving Points in Polls: Fresno State is receiving points in both polls as of March 28, including 12 points in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll released Monday. Virginia Tech is ranked No. 25 with 50 points. The Bulldogs are also just outside the Top 25 in the USA Today/NFCA with 31 points; the 25th ranked team has 35 points.

Leading the WAC: Fresno State as a team leads the WAC in pitching and fielding. The Bulldogs have a combined 1.70 earned run average and have struck out 293 batters in 271 1/3 innings pitched. Defensively the Bulldogs have a .975 fielding percentage and have committed 30 errors in 41 games.
On Top of the WAC: Fresno State has Robin Mackin leading the WAC in pitching with a 1.06 earned run and a 21-7 record. Mackin has recorded 245 strikeouts in 191 2/3 innings pitched. Kristin Sylvester ranks second in the WAC in doubles, having recorded 10 on the season, two back of the leader. Haley Perkins ranks fourth in hits and runs scored against WAC competition as well. Perkins has 51 hits and 39 runs scored.
What's Next: Fresno State returns home to face UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, April 10 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs hit the road later in the week when they travel to Las Cruces to face New Mexico State for a three-game series. The first game is on Friday, April 13 at 6 p.m. and the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 beginning at 1 p.m.
