Bulldogs Sweep Aggies

FRESNO, Calif. - In a double header for today's action the Fresno State (26-19, 11-4) Bulldogs captured their second victory by a 9-1 score against the New Mexico State (17-24, 4-11) Aggies Saturday night in front of 1,778 fans at Pete Beiden Field. Freshman Tanner Scheppers threw seven innings only allowing one run on five hits. He struck out a season and career-high 11 batters. His prior season high of six strikeouts recorded April 4 against Nevada. In the series sweep Fresno State totaled 31 strikeouts and only eight walks.
For action in the second game Fresno State jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third innings with six runs. Two runs came in on a Brian Lapin double recording one RBI. The other run came in on an error by the center fielder at 2-0. Steve Susdorf brought the third run in on a single through the left side and in the next at bat Tom Mendonca tripled off the left center field wall bringing in Susdorf at 4-0. The last two runs scored on an Alan Ahmady and Erik Wetzel single at 6-0.
New Mexico State did not get on the board until the top of the seventh when Tyler Hardt singled through the left side at 6-1.
The Bulldogs added extra insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. One run came in on a Brian Lapin single and two advanced home from Steve Susdorf's seventh home run of the season at 9-1.
Wetzel went 2-for-4 with two singles, one walk and one RBI. Alan Ahmady went 2-for-4 with one double, one single and one RBI. Brian Lapin went 3-for-5 with one double, two singles and two RBI's. Steve Susdorf went 3-for-5 with one home run, two singles and three RBI's.
Fresno State is assured first place contingent on Louisiana Tech, Hawai'i series. Louisiana Tech entered its late Saturday night game against Hawai'i with a 9-4 WAC record.
Next week the Bulldogs will travel Tuesday to take on the Santa Clara Broncos in a one game contest at Stephen Schott Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Fresno State will also face non-conference opponent Stanford in a make-up game Wednesday in Palo Alto, Calif. set for a 3:00 p.m. start. The weekend series will conclude at home against Cal Poly.
