Bulldogs Fall to Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State (25-19, 11-4) Bulldogs fell against the Santa Clara (21-21, 6-6) Broncos Tuesday night by a 9-1 score at Stephen Schott Stadium. Earlier this year the Bulldogs lost the last two contests at home.
In his second career start Sean Bonesteele (1-1, 5.93) threw two and one-third innings allowing three runs on two hits. Other pitchers seeing action were Jacob Hower, Brandon Miller, Drew Gagnier and Rashad Tucker.
To start the game off Erik Wetzel doubled on his first at bat and would later tag from second on a fly out from Todd Sandell. The Bulldogs grabbed their first run on a ground out RBI from Brian Lapin at 1-0.
In the bottom of the third inning Santa Clara scored three runs at 3-1. One run came in for the Broncos on a balk and two more advanced home on a base hit through the left side.
The Broncos scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an Evan LeBlanc single scoring David Hoffmire from second base. The next run came in on a double down the line from Tommy Medica advancing LeBlanc to home at 5-1.
Santa Clara added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning at 9-1. One run scored on a fielder's choice as all base runners advaced before the Bulldogs could record an out. The only two outs were recorded by Drew Gagnier on two strikeouts. The last three runs came in on a base clearing single.
Designated hitter Steve Detwiler went 3-for-4 with three singles.
The Bulldogs will head to Palo Alto, Calif. tomorrow to take on Stanford (16-20, 2-10) in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
