Fresno State Falls to Stanford, 7-2

PALO ALTO, Calif. - In the third and final game of the three-game series Fresno State (26-21, 4-11) was defeated by Stanford (17-21, 2-10) in a 7-2 score on Wednesday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. The teams were able to get two of those three games earlier this season with today's contest serving as a makeup. Fresno State's originally scheduled February 9 away game versus Stanford was postponed due to weather conditions. Stanford won both games earlier this year 9-1 and 6-4.
With Erik Wetzel tripling in his first at bat the Bulldogs were able to jump on the board quick at 1-0. Center fielder Brian Lapin brought Wetzel in on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Stanford was able to get on the board and take the lead in the bottom of the second inning on two sacrifice fly's at 2-1. The Cardinal added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning at 6-1. One run came in on a double down the right field line and three others on single's up the middle.
Cutting the lead to four the Bulldogs scored Tommy Mendonca in the top of the seventh inning on a double to left center from Todd Sandell. With runners on second and third Fresno State recorded its last out on a fly out.
Stanford added one more run in the bottom in the eighth inning with a home run to right field from Sean Ratliff.
Loren Storey went 2-for-3 with two singles and one walk. Mendonca went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Clayton Allison earned the start for the Bulldogs throwing one inning allowing no runs on no hits. Five other pitchers saw action in Brandon Burke, Justin Wilson, Jacob Hower Rashad Tucker and Jason Breckley. Wilson threw one and two-thirds innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Fresno State will now come back home for a three-game series against Cal Poly with the first game starting on Friday at 6:05 p.m. Series action between both teams will continue on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
