Fresno State Falls to Cal Poly, 6-4

FRESNO, Calif. - In their third non-conference game of the week the Fresno State (26-22, 11-4) Bulldogs fell to the Cal Poly (22-20, 8-4) Mustangs in a close 6-4 score Friday night at Beiden Field. Fresno State played Cal Poly February 6 at Baggett Stadium and lost 6-3. Clayton Allison (8-3, 3.79) earned the start on the mound for the Bulldogs throwing six innings and only allowing two runs on two hits.
Cal Poly managed to jump on the board first in the top of the second inning 2-0. Right fielder Bryan Kepner lined a double to right center to bring the first Mustang all the way from first base. The second and last run of the inning came in on a single to right field from designated hitter Corey Bethel.
With one out in the bottom of the second inning the Bulldogs were able to get on the board at 3-2. Todd Sandell was able to bring in the first run on a single up the middle scoring Tommy Mendonca. The second run came in on a single to right field from Erik Wetzel and the last run of the inning came in on Brian Lapin sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bulldogs took a two run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning at 4-2 when Danny Grubb hit his first home run of the season.
Cal Poly cut the lead at 4-3 when Kyle Smith singled up the middle bringing in Kyle Carson from third base.
In the top of the eighth inning the bats and runs came around for Cal Poly as it took a 6-4 lead. The Mustangs scored three runs on five hits which were all singles.
On the night Dan Grubb went 3-for-3 with three singles, two runs and one RBI. Steve Susdorf went 2-for-3 with one double and one single.
Series action will continue tomorrow between both teams with the first pitch at 6:05 p.m. Probable starters listed are left hander Justin Wilson (4-4, 3.38) for Fresno State and left handed pitcher Matt Leonard (3-4, 4.92) for Cal Poly.
