Cervantez Lifts Fresno State past New Mexico State

Fresno, Calif. - Jenna Cervantez had two singles and a double Thursday afternoon, but her biggest hit of the game came in the top of the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2. Cervantez hit a one-out solo home run over the left field fence, leading to a 3-2 Fresno State victory over New Mexico State on the second day of the WAC Tournament at Bulldog Diamond.
No. 2 Fresno State trailed 2-1 going into the fifth, but one run in the fifth and the Cervantez home run in the seventh sets up the Bulldogs against No. 1 seed Hawaii on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond.
Fresno State has now won eight straight games and improved to 44-16 on the season.
Robin Mackin earned her 33rd win of the year, pitching seven innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out five. Kim Watson picked up the loss for New Mexico State, falling to 19-15 on the year.
Offensively Fresno State was led by Cervantez, who went 4 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored. Haley Perkins went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and Merryann Barr went 1 for 3 with one RBI.
After trailing since the first inning, the Bulldogs tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Kristin Sylvester drove home Haley Perkins with a sinlge.
But the big hit came in the top of the seventh inning, when Jenna Cervantez hit a one-out solo home run over the left field fence to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs came out in the top of the first inning as the designated visiting team, and scored one run in their half.
Haley Perkins led the game off with a single to right field and later scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Merryann Barr.
But New Mexico State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to quickly regain the lead from the Bulldogs.
