Softball Takes Down No. 12 Hawaii in WAC Tournament

Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State softball team came out hot from the first inning and carried that momentum throughout the game, leading to a 9-3 victory over No. 12 Hawaii in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament Friday afternoon at Bulldog Diamond.
With the win, the Bulldogs are now 3-0 in the WAC Tournament and move into the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. Fresno State will face the No. 4 seed Nevada, after the Wolf Pack upset Hawaii in the late game Friday night.
Overall, Fresno State has now won nine straight games, and improved to 45-16 overall. Hawaii fell to 46-10 overall.
Robin Mackin pitched seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine batters in the win. Mackin improved to 34-9 overall. Kate Robinson picked up her first loss of the year, falling to 15-1.
Offensively, Nichole Willis led the Bulldogs, going 3 for 3 with two RBI and one home run. Robin Mackin went 3 for 4 with two RBI, Lisamarie Coronado had two RBI and Shannon Garvin added two RBI.
Fresno State didn't waste any time getting on the board Friday afternoon against Hawaii. The Bulldogs scored three runs on two hits in the first, taking a 3-0 lead that would hold up the entire game.
Haley Perkins began the game when she got hit on the first pitch. Jenna Cervantez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Perkins to second. Kristin Sylvester followed with a single to score Perkins and the Bulldogs were rolling.
Merryann Barr followed with a single and Nichole Willis loaded the bases with a walk. Robin Mackin drove in Sylvester with a fielder's choice and Lisamarie Coronado drove in Barr with a fielder's choice to cap off the scoring.
Hawaii cut into the Bulldogs' lead with two runs in the top of the third, but Fresno State answered with two runs in its half, taking a 5-2 lead. Shannon Garvin came up with the big hit in the third, hitting a two-run double with two outs.
Fresno State added one more run in the fourth inning when Nichole Willis hit her ninth home run of the year, a solo shot over the left field fence.
After Hawaii scored one run in the sixth inning, Fresno State answered with three more in the bottom half to open up the game.
