Offensive Explosion Leads Bulldogs Past San Jose State, 15-9

SAN JOSE, Calif. - On a brisk, cool night the Fresno State (27-24, 12-4) Bulldogs took care of business defeating conference opponent San Jose State (27-20, 6-10) by a 15-9 score at Municipal Stadium. Right hander Clayton Allison (9-3, 3.75) threw six and two-thirds innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Ozzie Lewis went 3-for-4 with two home runs, one single and five RBI's.
After a fairly quick two innings the Bulldogs scored their first run with an Erik Wetzel single through the right side bringing in Alan Ahmady at 1-0.
Fresno State scored its second run in the top of the fourth inning when Ozzie Lewis popped a short sacrifice fly near the right field line brining in Brian Lapin who slid home touching the plate with his right hand. The third run for the Bulldogs came in when Dan Grubb singled to left field scoring Tommy Mendonca from second base at 3-0.
After right hander Clayton Allison threw three scoreless innings the Spartans gathered their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double from Kyle Bellows scoring Chris Balatico at 3-1.
Catcher Dan Grubb delivered for the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth inning on a single to left field scoring Ozzie Lewis from third base at 4-1. With two runners on first and second Erik Wetzel brought disaster to the San Jose State ball club on a single to center field scoring two runs with a throwing error from the Spartans center fielder at 6-1.
San Jose State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth inning at 6-3 with one run scoring on a double play ground out and the second run scoring on an error from the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs put the lead back up to five at 8-3 when Ozzie Lewis hit a two run homer, his fifth on the season in the top of the top of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Spartans put a scare in the Bulldogs by scoring only two runs but making it three run game at 8-5. One run scored on a single to right field and a double to left field.
Fresno State needed insurance runs and that they got with Danny Grubb as the first batter in the top of the eighth inning hitting his second home run of the season at 9-5. To make it 10-5 Loren Storey hit a blooper to center field scoring Todd Sandell from third. Loren Storey scored after a throwing error by the San Jose State pitcher at 11-5. Two more runs came home when Ozzie Lewis hit his second home run on the night at 13-5. The Bulldogs scored another run on a Wetzel sacrifice fly to right field at 14-5. The last run for the Bulldogs scored on a chopper from pinch hitter Steve Detwiler at 15-5
San Jose State rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning scoring four runs for a final 15-9 score.
Fresno State had 20 hits on the night which tied its single-season high on the year. The last time the Bulldogs had 20 hits was March 30 in a 16-7 win against Sacramento State.
Dan Grubb went 3-for-3 with one home run, two singles and three RBI's.
Series action will continue tomorrow between both teams with the game time starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
