Kucerkova, Petukhova Lead 'Dogs in Classic Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomores Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova stormed into the Bulldog Classic's first day with an 8-0 win in the doubles round of 16. The 18th-ranked duo shut out Santa Clara's Galainena and Pham, setting the tone for the rest of the team. Kucerkova and Petukhova have won 11 straight going back to last season.
"It feels good to be back on the courts again after the summer," Petukhova said. "We played our game and we're ready for tomorrow's competition."
Senior Jacqueline Haskett and junior Tinesta Rowe were 8-2 winners over Pacific's Nezhura and Schuhmacher. Junior Danon Beatty and sophomore Vanessa Heroux also won in the round of 16, defeating Sacramento State's Martinez-Gutierrez and Valenzuela.
Kucerkova, the No. 1 seed in the singles draw, won her second-round match after a first-round bye. The 43rd-ranked sophomore cruised past Amber Silverstone of San Jose State, 6-1, 6-3. Petukhova also won her only singles match of the day, beating Stephanie Galainena of Santa Clara in the round of 32.
The singles round of 16 boasts five members of the squad. Along with Kucerkova and Petukhova, Beatty, Haskett and Rowe will also get into the action on Saturday.
Doubles starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday followed by singles. Admission is free.
