FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State soccer tied Hawaii, 0-0 in double overtime. This is the fourth game that has been decided in extra minutes. Kaitlyn Revel made eleven saves in the sixth shutout of the season for the Bulldog defense.
"It was a typical tough conference game," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "Every game means so much and it was a defensive battle to the end. It was a great opening weekend for us."
The first half was a physical match up, an aggressive Hawaii team attacked the Bulldogs right away looking for their first conference win.
A steady Bulldog defense was up for the challenge and kept the first half scoreless. Nicole Gutierrez and the offense made several good attempts, but were unable to get a shot off.
The first half was a physical battle for possession in the middle of the field and the Bulldogs entered the half tied at zero.
"The whole defensive line played well," said Springthorpe. "Hawaii has two first team All-WAC forwards and our defense did a great job at limiting their opportunities."
Both teams had good attempts and the defensive battle ended in 0-0 after 110 minutes of play.
Revel and the defense earned their sixth shutout of the season and second over the weekend.
"We knew coming in that we were going to have to be tough on defense," said Revel. "Everyone on the back line stepped up and together we earned the shutout."
