'Dogs Capture Both Titles at ITA Regional

FRESNO, Calif. - On the final day of the ITA Northwest Regional at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the campus of Stanford University, the Fresno State women's tennis team brought home not one, but two championships.
In the singles final, Bulldog senior No. 12 Melanie Gloria faced No. 65 Bojana Bobusic of Cal. Gloria and Bobusic have a history playing each other as they were matched up in the quarterfinals of last years' ITA Northwest Regional. Bobusic got the best of Gloria last year but that was not the case today. In a performance head coach Simon Thibodeau labeled as "a hard fought battle", Gloria dominated the match 6-3, 6-2 to win the 2008 ITA Northwest Regional Singles Championship, and earn an automatic bid in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
"Melanie played very smart today," said Thibodeau. "She played tough throughout the match and found a way to win."
The doubles semifinal featured two Bulldog duos against two teams from Cal. The tournament's top seed Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova cruised past Ilcinkas/Cossou of Cal 8-3, to claim one of the spots in the finals.
With their teammates waiting in the championship doubles match, No. 2 seed Gloria and teammate Tinesta Rowe did not take long to join their teammates in the final, finishing off Juricova/ Ravelojaona of Cal 8-4, setting up an all-Bulldog championship doubles match.
In a rematch of the 2007 ITA Regional doubles final, Kucerkova/Petukhova went up against fellow Bulldogs Gloria/Rowe. Gloria and Rowe captured the doubles title last year, but Kucerkova and Petukhova proved to be too strong this year winning the doubles championship 8-4.
"It's very exciting and shows the strength of our team to win both the singles and doubles championships," Thibodeau said. "The doubles match was a good battle, and Anastasia and Renata were the better team today."
