FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head softball coach Margie Wright began writing in Sept., a six-column series that runs through Feb. for `Fastpitch Delivery,' a monthly tabloid-size newspaper produced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
She is writing for a piece called, "Hall of Famer Instructional Series," and Wright was just the second Hall of Fame coach asked to write the column. The first was Sue Enquist, the former head coach at UCLA whose column ran Feb.-Aug. 2008. Each coach gets to select his/her own topic for the piece.
"It's very flattering to be asked to write this series," Wright said. "It makes me feel like people out there think I do have something to offer the youth coaches and the younger coaches in DI, DII and DIII. I've been in this for a while so I hope that I can touch on some topics that we all talk about but never put in writing."
Wright's first piece was on how to market the sport of softball and how to get more fans into the stands. She talked about a lot of the things Fresno State has done in the 23 year's she has been here to do just that.
"I think there is a way to make softball one of the major sports on each campus and that's what I wanted to get across in the first piece," Wright said.
The second piece Wright just finished and submitted last week was about athlete's today and how to learn to love to play the game.
"I was trying to stress that we could bring the love of the game back," Wright added. "I think at the younger ages we can be better at teaching the basic skills and teaching about competition and how to win and lose gracefully."
Wright is not sure yet what her third piece will be about but has a few ideas.
This is the 13th year of the paper and the first year for the series. Each issue is out the end of the month. The NFCA releases the weekly coaches top 25 poll during the season.
Fans can purchase each individual paper for $3 by e-mailing the NFCA at nfca@nfca.org or calling (662) 320-2155.
"Join the State - Fresno State"- The Bulldogs begin the 2009 season on Feb. 6 vs. Wisconsin in the Cathedral City Kick-Off hosted by Oregon State in Cathedral City, Calif., at 10:30 a.m.
