FRESNO, Calif. - Kevin Goessling has been named the WAC Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on a school record 58-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Bulldogs to a 30-28 road win over Utah State. It is the first time Goessling has received this honor.
Goessling, a freshman from Placentia, Calif. (Servite HS), made three field goals, all of at least 43 yards, in the fourth quarter, including the 58-yarder. The 58-yard field goal was the second longest in the nation this year and the longest to win a game. He also made all three extra point tries to finish with 12 points on the day. Goessling's other two field goals were 43 and 44-yarders.
Goessling has taken over the WAC leader in field goals, averaging 1.71 per game, good for 10th in the NCAA. He has made 12 this season, two more than Louisiana Tech's Brad Oestriecher. His 58-yard field goal to win the Utah State game was a Bulldog record and ranks as the second-longest in the NCAA this season.
The Bulldogs are 5-2 and 2-1 in WAC play. They play at Louisiana Tech on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The game can be seen live on the Bulldog Sports Network. Hawai`i quarterback Greg Alexander, Idaho defensive end Josh Shaw were named the WAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
