FRESNO, Calif. - In their final meet of the fall semester, the Bulldog equestrian team saved their best for last.
Three Bulldog riders earned MVP honors, and despite being undermanned due to injuries, Fresno State outclassed Delaware State 12-4 at the Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center near Dover. It was the farthest east the Dogs have ever competed.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs were two of the senior captains and a junior who has performed well all season long. Delaware State entered the day with a 3-1 record and the lone loss coming against defending national champion Georgia.
Fresno State won three of four events in each of the disciplines.
Senior Rebecca Flood, a two-year captain, won her match in Western Horsemanship and earned MVP honors with a score of 73.5. Flood, one of the top riders in the nation during her career, is a senior from Auberry, Calif. She led the Western Horsemanship riders of Allison Warkentin and Madison Silver who also won matches.
Fellow senior Kelsey Bullock, also a captain, won MVP honors in Equitation on the Flat. Her score of 77 was her sixth win in nine matches this season and her first MVP award of the season. Freshmen Jessica Kissell also scored a 77 to win her match and fellow freshman Kimberly Hewson-Budnik posted a 71 in victory.
Jennifer Jory, a junior from Fresno, Calif., picked up her second MVP award this season in Equitation over Fences with a score of 81. She also won MVP honors in a match against No.1-ranked Auburn in the first meet of the season. Seniors Katie Nenneker (78) and Cambria Kissell (76) easily won their matches.
Keri Blackledge, Fresno State's top reiner, did not compete today because she was at the Amateur World Championships in Oklahoma City. Nevertheless, the Bulldog earned wins: Haley Henderson (65.5), Jill Tebbe (68.5) and Shellie Dalluge (67.5).
Prior to returning to Fresno, the Bulldogs will visit Philadelphia and see some of the sights in that historic city.
The Dogs have a break until February 7 when they host defending national champion Georgia at the Student Horse Center.
Fresno State, ranked No. 8 in the nation, closed the fall with consecutive wins, including 10-9 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State.
