`Dogs Visit Cal Poly; Start New Year with WAC Home Opener
Fresno State heads to the California central coast for a return game with the Cal Poly Mustangs on Monday night (Dec. 29) at 7 p.m. for the final contest of a three-game road trip that started last week in Las Vegas, Nev. The `Dogs will return home for the start of 2009 as they start Western Athletic Conference play Jan. 3 with a Saturday night tilt by hosting the New Mexico State Aggies for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
About the Mustangs
Cal Poly, who plays in the Big West Conference, is 3-6 on the season and looking to rebound from losing a heartbreaker to Cal State Bakersfield 66-64 as the Roadrunners downed the Mustangs on a last-second jumper for the close victory. Cal Poly's wins have come against: North Florida (76-42), San Francisco (61-40) and Portland State (65-62). Head Coach Kevin Bromly is in his 10th year guiding the Mustangs to a 95-130 record under his tenure. Senior forward Titus Shelton leads Cal Poly by scoring 11.6 points per game and registering 17 blocks on the year. The Mustangs last three games have each been decided by three or fewer points.
Against the Mustangs
Fresno State leads the overall series with Cal Poly, 27-6. The Bulldogs have won the past 11 games and 17 of the last 18 meetings with the Mustangs, including last year's ESPNU's BracketBuster event on Feb. 23, 2008 when Fresno State won 76-70.
About the Aggies
New Mexico State University is 6-6 (before their Dec. 30 game) on the season with wins over UC Riverside (79-52), Pepperdine (90-66), Sacramento State (76-65), UTEP (90-78), Prairie View A&M (88-74) and Loyola Marymount (104-62). Head Coach Marvin Menzies is in his second year guiding the Aggies after finishing 2007-08 with a 21-14 record and a tie for first in the WAC regular season before falling a triple overtime thriller (107-102) to Boise State in the WAC Tournament Championship game.
Against the Aggies
Fresno State trails the overall series with New Mexico State, 17-12. The Aggies have won the past two contests but the `Dogs have won three of the past five meetings.
LAST WEEK: O'Neil Named to LVC All-Tournament Team
After sweeping the first two rounds of the Las Vegas Classic in Fresno during Finals Week by defeating Northern Colorado (70-65) and USC Upstate (72-47), the Bulldogs traveled to Sin City to complete tournament play. Despite a valiant first half battle, the `Dogs fell to Creighton (84-65) in the third round and lost to Rick Majerus' Saint Louis Billikens (56-52) in the final round. Senior guard Dwight O'Neil earned a spot on the All-Tournament team by averaging 14 points and four assists during the four games. Junior forward Sylvester Seay averaged 17.5 points in Las Vegas to lead the team.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs continue road play as they battle Cal Poly on Monday, December 29th at 7 p.m. The `Dogs return to the Save Mart Center on Saturday, January 3 as they open WAC play against New Mexico State at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now through the Save Mart Center box office, by calling (559) 485-TIXS or online at ticketmaster.com.
