SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After arriving in San Diego at 10 p.m. Thursday night for two morning games the following day, the Fresno State softball team had a motto Friday morning, "Sleep and Sweep." That is just what the Bulldogs did. Fresno State shut out Indiana 10-0 in five innings in game one before defeating Tulsa 8-1 in game two of the Campbell Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State. Fresno State improves to 4-0 for the first time since 2001.
Game 1
Freshman Morgan Melloh earned her third win with her second complete game of the season and her first shut out. Melloh had 10 strikeouts and went 2-3 from the place with three RBI's.
Melloh gave up a lead off hit to Indiana's Julia Hamilton then struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
The Bulldogs first hit of their season-high 15 in the game came in the bottom of the first with a double by Senior Jenna Cervantez.
Indiana got two quick singles in the top of the second but after a foul out to Nicole Angene on the first base side, Melloh earned a strike out to leave runners on first and third.
Angene had her first hit of her career in the bottom of the second and after Melloh struck out the side in the third, the Bulldog bats began to explode in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs, Aja Scheuber hit a blooper to left field and Haley Perkins scored. Lisamarie Coronoado hit to left field and Melloh hit a double to left field which scored Scheuber and Coronoado. Angene hit a double to left center with scored Melloh from second. With four runs on six hits in the inning it was the Bulldogs most productive inning on 2008.
Cervantez hit her second home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth. Scheuber hit a double to left field and scored off a single to center by Melloh.
Perkins singled in the bottom of the fifth and Haley Gilleland scored from second. Caitlin Stiglich then hit a three-run home run to end the game.
Cervantez lead the Bulldogs with three hits. Perkins, Scheuber, Melloh and Angene all had two hits a piece.
Game 2
Freshman pitcher Nicole Angene earned her first win as a Bulldog as she went 4 1/3 innings. Fresno State gave her plenty of run support as well as Fresno State had eight runs on eight hits.
Stiglich hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, her second home run of the day, to give the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. Fresno State then scored one run in both the second and third inning and three more in the fourth. A run by Tulsa in the top of the fifth kept them alive, but that's all the Golden Hurricane would get.
Angene finished with six strikeouts, and Melloh had two and she came in the fifth inning to finish the ball game.
Fresno State was led by Haley Perkins and Stiglich with two hits a piece. Stiglich and Scheuber each had two RBI's to lead the team.
