FRESNO, Calif. - It is time to "Think Pink." This year the Fresno State women's basketball team will be one of over 600 colleges and universities from around the country participating in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses and in the communities.
The actual "Think Pink Night" is February 14, when the Bulldogs host the University of Idaho in the Save Mart Center. Thanks to partnerships with KSEE 24, ESPN Radio, Fresno State women's basketball and the Central Valley affiliate for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Bulldog fans can be a part of the event by purchasing a Think Pink shirt at the Bulldog Shop for $10.
"We are excited to participate in Think Pink Night," Fresno State women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins said. "This is a great cause and it is extremely important to raise awareness of this important issue. As a women's basketball team we appreciate the support from KSEE 24, ESPN Radio and the Central Valley affiliate for Susan G. Komen for the Cure."
The Fresno State athletic program will also donate $1 from every ticket sold on the February 14 game back to the Central Valley affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Seventy-five percent of the money raised will remain here in Fresno to assist in education, screening, treatment and support of breast cancer. The other 25 percent goes to the Komen national research group in hopes of finding a cure. For more information on the Central Valley affiliate for Susan G. Komen for the Cure people can log into http://www.komencentralvalley.org/.
"This is such a different venue for us," Sharon Johnson, Executive Director of the Central Valley affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said. "I can't tell you how fortunate we are to team up with an athletic team. We appreciate any opportunity to promote breast cancer awareness."
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) began "Think Pink" in 2007 with more than 120 schools participating. Fans wishing for more information on the WBCA's "Think Pink" initiative can log onto www.wbca.org/thinkpink.asp.
