FRESNO, Calif. - After a dominating two-game sweep over Big 10 foe Indiana, the Fresno State baseball team appeared ready to roll into the first day of the Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic. The Dogs opened tournament by scoring five runs in the first three innings against fellow WAC opponent New Mexico State before the Aggies put eight runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning, took control of the game, and cruised to a 13-8 victory.
The Dogs trailed 1-0 heading into the second inning when freshman Trent Soares singled in Ryan Overland, who walked to start the inning.
The Dogs added four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead, all with two outs. Overland homered to right centerfield. Then Steve Detwiler, Todd Sandell and Soares each walked, bringing to the plate Gavin Hedstrom. After battling to a 3-2 count with runners on move, he drilled a single to centerfield clearing the bases.
The fourth inning got away from the Dogs as the Aggies scored eight runs on six hits as the Bulldogs committed a pair of errors. Fresno State entered the nightcap with just seven errors in 12 games.
Detwiler, a sophomore, drew the Dogs a run closer, 9-6, with a solo homerun in the fifth inning. It was his first of the season and the fourth of his career.
The Aggies added four more in the top of the eighth inning to run the lead to 13-6.
With just six outs remaining, the Dogs battled back with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Steve Susdorf, the WAC's preseason player of the year, drilled a double down the right field line for his fifth of the season that scored Muno and Hedstrom.
The rally ended there for the Dogs who fell to 5-7 on the season. New Mexico State improved to 5-3 on the season.
