Bulldogs Finish Strong at 62nd Annual Western Intercollegiate

The Fresno State men's golf team answered back in the third and final round at the 62nd Annual Western Intercollegiate. Led by junior Matt Ryan the `Dogs posted the second lowest round with 16-over, 296. Only UC Irvine had a better score with 294 to tie for second place. The Bulldogs strong third round helped them move up the leaderboard two spots for 13th place with a 54-hole total of 913.
"The golf course is so difficult, the scores are all very high," said head coach Mike Watney. "Overall it was pretty disappointing. It looks like it is going to come down to the WAC tournament to get a chance at entering the NCAA. We would like to show we are a good team over in Texas."
Ryan who started the day tied for 45th place fired a 68 in the final round to tie for sixth place with 10-over par at 220. Ryan was the only player in the 90-man field to shoot under par and had the low round by three strokes on Tuesday at the par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. This marks Ryans second top-ten finish of the season and fifth all-time at Fresno State.
"It was a great round for Matt," Watney said. "He made some key six-footers and played the Pasatiempo course like he had to."
Michael Gideon also improved in the third round with a 74, his lowest score of the tournament. Gideon shot 229 to tie for 41st place with 19-over par. Todd Angel tied for 46th place with 76-75-79 - 230. Grant Doverspike tied for 68th place with 24-over 234. Brad Wyatt finished in 86th place with 244.
Michigan State lost the top-spot to Saint Mary's after shooting 34-over par in the final round. Saint Mary's clinched the title by one stroke with 880 and Michigan State tied with UC Irvine with 881.
Jack Newman, a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa, won for the first time this season and the second in his career with a final-round 78 for a four-over par 214 total. He finished two strokes ahead of Saint Mary?s senior Mike McRae, the second-round leader. McRae and Newman were paired together after each player had sub-70's scores for the first two rounds, but neither could not muster a final round birdie. McRae had nine bogeys and one double-bogey. Newman had four bogeys and two double bogeys and took the individual lead for good with a par on the 16th hole.
