Detwiler Goes 4-for-4 at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team rallied from a 5-2 deficit after seven innings with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to send the game into an extra stanza but the Bulldogs still lost 6-5 in 10 innings on Tuesday to Santa Clara.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 3-6 while Santa Clara upped its record to 7-1.
Steve Detwiler led the Bulldogs offensive attack going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Alan Ahmady also had two hits for Fresno State. As a team the Dogs pounded out 11 hits and held the Broncos to nine.
Brandon Burke suffered the loss for Fresno State as he tossed the final three and 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits. Holden Sprague got the Bulldogs off to a nice start on the mound as he pitched the first five innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit.
Fresno State trailed 5-2 going into the eighth inning when they scored two runs to come within one at 5-4. Tommy Mendonca started the scoring with a one-out homerun over the left-center fence. Later in the inning Erik Wetzel plated Detwiler on a single to left-center. Detwiler reached base earlier in the inning on an infield single.
Steve Susdorf opened the top of the ninth inning being hit by a pitch. He later scored the game-tying run on a Detwiler double to right-center.
In the bottom of the 10th, Santa Clara's Patrick Glenn scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk.
Fresno State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Susdorf led off the inning with a single. Two batters later Mendonca reached base on a passed ball strike out that advanced Susdorf to third base. Detwiler then scored Susdorf on a single to left field. Mendonca later scored the second run off a sacrifice RBI by Danny Muno.
The Bulldogs held the lead until the seventh inning when Santa Clara scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Fresno State returns to the field on Saturday, March 8 when they host Indiana at 2:05 p.m.
