Fresno State wins UC Davis Quadrangular

FRESNO, Calif. - Both Fresno State's men and women's track and field teams overwhelmed the competition at the UC Davis Quadrangular, each winning out on the opening weekend of outdoor track and field. On the individual level, three Bulldogs, Sharon Ayala, Gary Lee, and Oscar Rodriguez, qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet.
The Bulldog men scored 75.5 points, host-UC Davis took second with 67.5, Stanford placed third with 41, and San Francisco rounded out the teams with eight points. The women had the same placings; Fresno State's women championed the meet with 77 points, followed by the Aggies with 61, third went to Stanford with 43, and San Francisco was fourth with 13.
On the field, Lee won the long jump with a leap of 24-1.75 (7.36m), good enough for a spot at the NCAA Regional Meet. Teammate Roy Phelps' jump of 22-5.75 (6.85m) was good enough for third. Phelps also took third in the pole vault, clearing 15-1 (1.5m). Taylor Franzman also vaulted over 15-1, but an earlier miss put him in fifth. Erik Fossen leapt for 47-11.25 (14.61m) to take silver in the triple jump.
The Fresno State throwers put on a great show as well. Brian Vazquez tossed the hammer 195-8 (59.63) to win the event and qualify for the Regional Meet. Chris Witscher took second with 184-8 (56.29m), Oscar Rodriguez's 177-2 (54.0m) put him in third, followed by Raul Gonzales in fourth at 161-10 (49.34m). James Nenadal took second with a javelin throw of 147-3 (44.88m). Rodriguez added a silver in shot put to his day's finishes, throwing for 53-3 (16.23m).
Dondre McDonald dominated the sprints, winning both the 100m (10.75 seconds) and the 200m (21.79s) dash. Darryl Miller took the gold in the 400m, clocking in at 49.46s. Frank Sanders brought home second in the 800m run, behind first by .06 of a second at 1:53.44 and then took third in the 1,500m with a time of 3:54.50. Val-Pierre Dai'Re championed the 400m hurdles with a time of 52.57s and then finished in third in the 110m hurdles, timing in at 14.62s.
The Bulldogs won both relays on the day, winning both the 4x100m and the 4x400m relays by nearly a second over their competition.
Ayala's hammer throw of 200-5 (61.10m) not only won her the event, it also qualified her for the NCAA Regional Meet. Teammates Grace Wiesmann and Nancy Vizcarra placed second and third, respectively, to sweep the podium. Brooke Pighin threw the javelin 142-5 (43.40m) to finish second in the event. Rosario Sanchez placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-7.5 (13.60m). Kayla Xavier took third in both the shot put and discus throw, with marks of 43-1.75 (13.15m) and 139-8 (42.57m) respectively.
Tiera Hilliard bested the competition in the 400m dash, timing in at 55.85s. Christina Lopez championed the 200m dash with a time of 24.91, with Katrina Arnold in second and Rayna White in third. White also took second in the 100m dash at 12.32s and Arnold placed third at 12.39s.
Roxanne Sellick placed second in the 800m, followed closely by Marina Santana in third, with times of 2:17.29 and 2:18.57 respectively. Sellick and Santana finished in succession in the 1,500m as well, taking third and fourth.
T'Shara Hicks championed the 400m hurdles with a time of 64.13s. Teammates Latoya Green and Vanessa Sautebin were close behind in third and fourth.
Both the 4x100m and the 4x400m Bulldog relay teams brought home silver.
Sara Savage cleared 11-11.75 (3.65m) in the pole vault for second place. Andrea Greenman and Cara Montes each vaulted over 11-5.75 (3.50m) to tie for fourth. Erica Embry's leap of 18-0.25 (5.49m) was good enough for second. Leshay Dorsey jumped over 5-3 (1.60m) for third in the high jump. Shay Miles leapt 38-0.25 (11.59) in the triple jump to take third place.
The Bulldogs host Cal Poly at Warmerdam Field on Saturday, March 15.
