Fresno State bests Cal Poly at Dual

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field teams continued their dominance, with both the men and women besting Cal Poly in the dual meet at Warmerdam Field Saturday. On the women's side, the Bulldogs easily outdistanced Cal Poly, 111.5-79.5. Fresno State's men downed the Mustangs, 101-90, in the first of two home events for the Bulldogs this season.
The Bulldogs started the day strong, as Grace Wiesmann won the day's first event, the hammer throw. Wiesmann's won the event in her first and only throw, tossing the hammer 54.29m, qualifying her for the NCAA Regional. Sharon Ayala came in second (53.72m), followed by Nancy Vizcarra (50.12m), Cindy Rojas (46.96m), Amanda Rollin (46.60m), and Kayla Xavier (44.81m), all ahead of the Cal Poly competitors. Rosario Sanchez championed the shot put with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 15.50m. Xavier came in third, hitting the NCAA Regional qualification mark of 14.30m. Both Sanchez and Xavier set a new personal record for the season with their marks. Ayala placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 45.79m.
Erica Embry's long jump of 5.33m was good enough for second. Courtney Castaneda jumped a personal best of 5.28m in the long jump for third. Both Leshay Dorsey and Brooke Pighin cleared personal bests in the high jump, to take second and third. Sarah Savage vaulted over the NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 3.85m in the pole vault, winning the event and setting a new personal best. Mady Hintergardt took third in the event, clearing 3.55m. Pighin tossed the javelin 44.08m to win the event and qualify for the NCAA Regional. Jacki Vazquez took third with a personal best toss of 38.14m. Shay Miles brought home silver in the triple jump with a jump of 11.60m.
As the field events continued, the running events began with the 4x100m relay. Fresno State easily beat out Cal Poly, timing in at 46.70. Roxanne Sellick had a come-from-behind finish in the 1,500m run, sprinting the final 100 meters to overcome Mustang Lauren Mulkey for first place. Krystina Jackson won the 100m hurdles in 13.94 with Vanessa Sautebin on her heels at 13.99. Tiera Hilliard won the 400m dash, timing in at 56.20. Renee Winston's 57.40 in the same event brought home second place. Rayna White and Katrina Arnold went 1-2 in the 100m dash, clocking in at 11.90 and 12.10 respectively. Sellick had a repeat of her earlier finish, coming from behind in the 800m run for the gold in the event at 2:15.30. Marina Santana took third with a time of 2:16.40.
Jackson took third in the 400m hurdles, crossing at 1:03.80, with T'Shara Hicks just behind her at 1:04.11. In the 200m dash, Christina Lopez and Arnold finished first and second, timing in at 24.70 and 24.90 respectively. In the final individual running event of the day, Marissa McPhail overcame the pack to win the event in 10:21.58. Meridith Hawkins was third at 10:25.29. In the day's final event, the Fresno State 4x400m relay team bested its opponents by nearly seven seconds, clocking in at 3:54.12.
Brian Vazquez won the hammer throw for the second time in a week, re-qualifying for the NCAA Regional in the event, setting a personal best of 61.88m. Chris Witscher also qualified of regionals in the hammer, tossing his own new personal best of 57.10m. In the javelin, James Nenedal put up a personal best of 46.53m for second. Oscar Rodriguez threw the shot put 16.63m for a silver finish. Previous NCAA Regional qualifier, Gary Lee bettered his qualifying mark with a new personal best of 7.60m in the long jump for the top place in the event. Erik Fossen was second with a personal best leap of 7.16m and Roy Phelps took third with his own personal best of 6.86m. Fossen put on a solid performance in the high jump, winning the event with a jump of 2.00m Lyle Quillen had the Bulldog's top pole vault, clearing 4.60m for third. Witscher championed the discus throw, tossing the disc 47.59m. After taking second in the long jump, Fossen won the triple jump with a leap of 14.65m, a new personal best.
In the running events, Fresno State won the first event, the 4x100m, timing in at 41.30. Frank Sanders took second in the second running event, the 1,500m run with a time of 3:57.20. Val-Pierre Dai'Re dominated the 110m hurdles at 14.31, winning the event and finishing just shy of the NCAA qualifying mark. Kendrick Young was third with a personal best of 14.93. Young went on to win the 400m hurdles later in the day.
Kenny Moon, Juan Valdez and Darryl Miller went 1-2-3 in the 400m dash, crossing at 48.80, 49.00, and 49.20 respectively. In the day's shortest event, the 100m dash, Dondre McDonald took silver with a time of 10.51, good enough to qualify for the NCAA Regionals*. Gary Lee was just a tick back in third, at 10.73. The 800m race was all about Sanders, as he overcame Cal Poly's Evan Anderson for the win, timing in at 1:53.80. Dai'Re championed his second event on the day, winning the 200m dash in 21.96. McDonald came in third in the half lap. Erick Garcia recorded a personal best in the 3,000m, timing in at 8:45.55, good enough for third. The Bulldogs finished the day with a bang, winning the 4x400m relay at 3:17.20.
The Bulldogs travel to Mt. SAC on Wednesday, March 19 for a dual prior to the Cal-Nevada Championships the following week.
