Bulldogs have strong showing at Stanford Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field faced the toughest competition of the year this weekend at the Stanford Invitational.
The Bulldog women encountered great success at the invite, taking eleven top-10 finishes in the "top sections" of various events. The relay teams fared the best, as both Fresno State's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays overwhelmed the competition. The 4x100m relay's 46.44 was a season-best for the team.
Sharon Ayala took silver in the hammer throw's top section with a throw of 195-5 (59.57m). Grace Wiesmann also earned a top-10 nod with a 168-6 (51.36m) for eighth.
Two Bulldogs also had top times in the 100m hurdles. Senior Krystina Jackson placed second with a 14.22 and Vanessa Sautebin was fifth with a personal-best of 14.38. Erica McCoy took seventh in the 400m hurdles, timing in at personal-best 62.67.
Reigning WAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, Tiera Hilliard, earned sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 56.46.
Brooke Pighin's javelin throw of 143-4 (43.69m) gave her a sixth place finish among the competition.
Fresno State had two top finishers in the top shot put section, as Kayla Xavier and Rosario Sanchez took seventh and ninth with throws of 45-5.25 (13.85m) and 44-6 (13.56m) respectively.
Christina Lopez led the Bulldog sprinters will a ninth-place finish in the 200m dash at 25.15.
Both Marina Santana and Roxanne Sellick each had personal-bests in the 800m run. Santana and Sellick each earned spots in the Fresno State Top 10 in the career list with times of 2:12.61 and 2:12.90 respectively.
Three throwers also earned personal bests over the weekend. Kayla Xavier had a PR of 154-5 (47.08m) in the hammer throw. Nancy Vizcarra bettered her top mark in the discus throw by five feet with a mark of 140-10 (42.93m). Rosario Sanchez's 131-7 (40.12m) in the discus is her new career-best.
The men also proved themselves to be tough competitors, taking six top-10 finishes in the top-sections.
Underclassmen Gary Lee and Andrew Pancotti led the men's finishers with bronze finishes in their events. Lee captured third in the long jump with a leap of 23-10.75 (7.28m). Pancotti, the reigning WAC pole vault champion, placed third clearing 16-0.75 (4.90m). Teammate Roy Phelps had a fourth-place finish with the same height, but an earlier miss. The height was a season-best for both Bulldog pole vaulters.
Oscar Rodriguez continued to throw well in the shot put, taking sixth with a toss of 54-11.5 (16.75m).
Erik Fossen earned a seventh-place finish in the high jump, soaring over 6-6.75 (2.0m).
Brian Vazquez rounded out the Fresno State top finishes with eighth place in the hammer throw at 193-2 (58.89m).
Freshman Raul Gonzalez had a personal best in the discus throw, tossing the disc 159-2 (48.52m).
The Bulldogs travel to the UCLA Invitational, which is set to begin on Thursday, April 10.
