FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to help fight cancer and raise awareness in the Central Valley at the April 25th series opener vs. nationally-ranked WAC rival Hawai'i.
The American Cancer Society will be promoting their upcoming Relay for Life event, Saturday April 26th at the Fresno State Bulldog practice field. Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration where groups of friends, families, neighbors and coworkers form teams to walk or run around a track, to raise spirits, awareness and funds to fight cancer through American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient and family services.
Tables will be set up on the concourse with information regarding the American Cancer Society's free programs and services, how to participate in the Relay for Life event and cancer survivors can sign up for a free survivor t-shirt at the Relay for Life table.
"Collaborating with the Fresno State softball team is a community celebration that allows everyone to join the fight against cancer," said Erica Jones, the Director of Marketing Communications at the American Cancer Society.
A pre-game ceremony to honor cancer survivors, those currently battling cancer, and those who have lost their battle will begin prior to player introductions as some survivors will be taken onto the field and receive a special gift from the Fresno State softball team.
Members of various fraternities at Fresno State are selling tickets to the game for $5.00 with $3.00 of every ticket being split to benefit both the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society.
"We are thrilled to join with the Fresno State Athletic Department in helping to sell tickets for the game," said Dylan Wieland, President of Sigma Phi Epsilon. "Cancer awareness really comes close to home as there have been a number of brothers who have been personally affected in the last semester."
Fresno State sororities will be taking donations at the gate prior to the 6:00 p.m. start. The ACS will give away Relay for Life flags to the first 500 fans that walk through the gates encouraging them to participate in the Relay for Life event.
