Pitching Strong Against No. 7 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif.- - The Fresno State baseball team battled No. 7 California tough but lost 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Evans Diamond in Berkeley. Cal improved its record to 19-6-1 while the Bulldogs dropped to 16-14.
Justin Wilson suffered the loss as he pitched six innings, allowed five hits and gave up four earned runs while striking out three. Justin Miller, Kris Tomlinson and Brandon Burke all saw action on the mound. The four Fresno State pitchers allowed only six hits to a team that was hitting .318 coming into the game.
Fresno State had five hits for the game. The five hits came from Erik Wetzel, Steve Susdorf, Ryan Overland, Tommy Mendonca and Steve Detwiler. Both teams scored all of their runs in one running. After five scoreless innings, the Golden Bears scored their five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Four of the runs came on a grand slam by Blake Smith.
The Bulldogs answered Cal's five run inning with four of their own in the top of the seventh.
Ryan Overland Tommy Mendonca opened the inning with back-to-back singles to left field. Steve Detwiler then scored the Dogs first run of the game on a double to right-center that scored Overland.
Danny Grubb reached base on a Cal fielding error and would advance to third on the play after Cal right fielder Charlie Cutler committed another error. The two errors on the play allowed Mendonca and Detwiler to score on the play, cutting the Bears lead to 5-3. Grubb scored the fourth run on a ground out by Danny Muno.
Fresno State has a week off before returning to the field on April 9 when they play at Cal Poly at 6 p.m.
