Baseball Battles Santa Clara

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball dropped a nonconference game to Santa Clara on Tuesday, losing 10-8. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 24-17 while Santa Clara improved to 22-16.
The Bulldogs led 8-3 after four innings and maintained an 8-7 lead going into the ninth inning but the Broncos scored three runs in the top of the ninth to rally for the victory.
Fresno State had 10 hits on the night led by two from Tommy Mendonca. Eight other Bulldog batters recorded hits.
The Bulldogs struck first in the second inning with four runs. Alan Ahmady opened the inning with a single to left field and Nick Hom then walked. With one out, Mendonca then singled up the middle allowing Ahmady to score from second base.
Jake Johnson then followed with his first career homerun over the left field fence to give the Bulldogs the 4-0 lead.
The Broncos answered with three runs in the top of the fourth but Fresno State came back with a four run bottom half of the inning. Danny Muno started the scoring with a single down the left field line. Then with one out Erik Wetzel walked and Steve Susdorf hit his WAC leading 20th double of the season, allowing Muno to score.
Wetzel would score on a ground out by Ahmady to give the Dogs a 6-0 lead. Hom followed with a ground rule double to center field that plated Susdorf and Hom then scored off a single to center field by Trent Soares to up lead to 8-5.
Santa Clara added two more runs in the seventh to come within one run at 8-7.
The Bulldogs return to Beiden Field to play host to San Francisco on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on 580 KMJ and tickets for the game are buy one get one free.
