FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary's on Wednesday, winning game one 5-0 and falling 4-3 in game two. The Bulldogs are now 46-9 on the season.
Game One
Haley Perkins was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first for the Bulldogs, followed by a walk to Haley Gilleland by the Gaels starting pitcher Megan Galloway. Jenna Cervantez then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
Perkins scored the first run of the game to make it 1-0 Bulldogs after Caitlin Stiglich reached on an error by the shortstop.
Pitcher Morgan Melloh hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field for a 2-0 Bulldog lead after two.
Gilleland walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and stole her 20th base of the season. She is just seven stolen bases off of the Fresno State single season record set by Karen Tabor in 1980.
An Aja Scheuber single to left field scored Gilleland from third. Stiglich hit her team-high 14th double of the season to send Scheuber home for a 4-0 lead after five. Stiglich is just one double shy of cracking the top 10 single season list.
Perkins singled in the infield followed by a walk to Gilleland. A single by Cervantez scored Perkins from second for a 5-0 Bulldog win.
With 13 strikeouts in the game, Melloh now has 16 10-plus strikeout games. She improves to 34-5 on the year and is second in wins in a single season, just two shy of the school record set by Robin Mackin in 2007 and Maureen Brady in 1994. Melloh now has 34 complete games and 17 shutouts.
Game Two
Freshman Ashley Cox made her sixth start of the season in the circle for the Bulldogs.
Kat Delpit gave the Gaels their first runs of the series with a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth for the lead.
Ryane Petersen entered in relief in the top of the fourth with one out and a runner on first to replace Cox for the Bulldogs.
Cervantez was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth, followed by Scheuber reaching first on an error by the second baseman. A bunt down the third base line would load the bases with no outs.
Ashley White singled to center field to get the Bulldogs on the board at 3-1 after four.
St. Mary's added to its lead in the top of the fifth at 4-1.
Melloh would enter to replace Petersen in the circle.
The Bulldogs would cut the lead to 4-2 with two outs when Scheuber reached second on an error and scored off a single by White.
A single by Lindsay Milchovich would score Michelle Palazuelos for a 4-3 ball game.
Cervantez and Scheuber hit back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulldogs rally would fall just short.
With 275.2 innings pitched on the season, Melloh moved up to seventh on the single-season list at Fresno State. Melloh is also tied for sixth in appearances with 47.
The Bulldogs conclude the regular season with a three-game WAC series against New Mexico State beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond.
