SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.- - The Fresno State baseball team out hit Cal Poly 11-7 but lost 8-5 on Wednesday in nonconference play. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 16-15 while Cal Poly improved to 11-17 and tied the season series at 2-2.
The two teams combined to use 15 pitchers in the game. Steve Susdorf and Danny Grubb each had three hits to lead the Bulldogs offensive attack. Gavin Hedstrom also had two hits in the game.
After giving up two runs in the first inning the Bulldogs came back and tied the game in the top of the second with two no-out runs. Tommy Mendonca started the inning with a walk and Steve Detwiler then was hit by a pitch. After a Grubb walk Hedstrom hit a two-RBI single to left-center that scored Mendonca and Detwiler.
Cal Poly then scored three runs in the third and fifth inning to jump out to an 8-2 lead. The Dogs got a run in the sixth and then Alan Ahmady hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh to cut the Mustang lead to 8-5.
The Bulldogs had the bases loaded with two outs and the winning run at the plate in the eighth inning but Cal Poly pitcher Derrick Saito forced Susdorf into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Bulldogs return to the diamond to host WAC foe Louisiana Tech on Friday at 6 p.m. All four games of the series can be heard on 580 KMJ.
